The traditional Cretan village of Megala Chorafia lies in the foothills of the White Mountains just 12km from the beautiful Venetian town of Chania, 3km from the town of Souda and 4km from the beachside village of Kalives.
Villa Thea and Villa Susanna lie on the eastern ridge of the village which extends to the ancient Cretan/Roman ruins of Aptera and beyond to the Turkish fortress with its majestic view of the western Crete coastline.
The village amenities include 3 tavernas and a cafeneion (traditional local coffee shop) offering traditional Cretan food and there is also a minimarket which sells fresh bread daily. The tavernas offer guests the opportunity to meet the local villagers over a glass or two of Ouzo or the local drink ‘raki’.
There are many beautiful beaches nearby. The nearest beaches are Kyani Akti (Blue Beach) in Kalami (2.5km) and Kalives Beach. Both beaches have tavernas which sell fresh locally caught fish. The use of a hired car is strongly recommended as the local area offers many places of interest some of which are not accessible on foot. There is also a daily bus service to Chania.
Megala Chrorafia is a perfect place for birdwatchers to spot many types of birds, from swallows and swifts to falcons and eagles. The lofty position of both houses makes bird watching easy and worthwhile.
